Event Description:
Occupational therapists in private practice are a rare breed, but can offer valuable insights about the challenges, lessons and rewards gleaned from venturing into private practice.  Invited speakers will share what aspects of evidence based practice have proved the most useful in private practice, offer suggestions about navigating state and national regulatory bodies, and offer advice for those OTs who may be considering such a venture.

Learning Objectives:

  •  Identify four client populations which may benefit from occupational therapy offered in a private practice setting
  • Delineate four aspects of evidence-based practice which have the potential to benefit clients served in a private practice setting
  • Consider personal strengths and interests which may support private practice work
  •  Gain a basis comprehension of Minnesota regulations governing occupational therapists in private practice, and whom to contact with additional questions regarding such regulations


Speaker Bios:
Jenica Domanico, MAOT 2012, is a St. Catherine University alumna from the Henrietta Schmoll School of Health’s Master of Occupational Therapy (MAOT) program. She is a registered and licensed occupational therapist and certified lactation educator counselor with nearly a decade of experience and training in crisis mental health, trauma informed care, perinatal mood and anxiety care, breastfeeding education, and physical and cognitive needs for rehabilitation.

In 2017, Domanico founded MOM plus ME, LLC, a company that offers personal rehabilitation services for people who are pregnant and new parents. Domanico helps mothers design and implement a plan for the parenting life journey that supports the mother and family.

Jessica Engman, OTR/L is proud to provide mobile outpatient services to adults with with acute and chronic conditions, mental health and substance use disorders through her private practice, EvolveWell Occupational Therapy. She graduated from St Catherine University with a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy in 1997. She has 23 years of clinical experience treating adults and older adults in hospital, community-based outpatient and homecare settings.

Jessica enjoys learning and educating and has over 10 years adjunct teaching experience at University of Wisconsin LaCrosse, St Catherine University and the University of Minnesota. She is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) and has an Executive Certificate in Home Modifications (ECHM). She is a Healthe Habits for Living licensed provider and has training in USC’s Lifestyle Redesign evidence-based practices, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and sensory-enhanced yoga techniques.

Kristine Haertl, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, ACE  is a professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at St. Catherine University. She has been active in research related to peer-supported mental health housing models, the role of writing in the development of the self, the lived experience of autism spectrum disorder and the exploration of the nature and efficacy of services at a free-standing psychiatric occupational therapy clinic.
 
Haertl’s research has led to legislative changes regarding evidenced-based mental health practice in Minnesota and has helped secure funding for the development of Fairweather housing units in Pennsylvania. In addition to full-time faculty work, she has served as the chair of a large mental health board in Minnesota; is the President of Tasks Unlimited Training Center Board; serves on the national Society for the Study of Occupation board; is the co-founder and is the co-chair of Occupational Therapy for the Advancement of Minnesota Mental Health Services. In addition to full time faculty work, Haertl maintains a private practice consulting with systems and individuals with psychiatric disorders and developmental disabilities. Kristi has two books, over 50 publications and over 100 state, national and international presentations.

Beth Kessler, OTR/L, LC, graduated with a BS in occupational therapy from Tufts University in 1973.  She provided OT services to long term care facilities before co-founding a Medicare certified rehabilitation agency which sold to a Baltimore based medical conglomerate in 1995.  She has spent the last two decades consulting to OT programs and pursuing alternative avenues for the provision of occupational therapy services of which the past five years has specifically been in expansion of community based mental health services.  Beth is also a life coach, a caregiver, and very into produce (vegetables, mainly).
