Let’s Eat: Feeding Strategies for Home-Based Early Intervention

Event Description:
This course will include:
    •    Description: Come learn effective strategies for assessment and intervention of feeding difficulties based on current research such as issues with bottle feeding, picky eaters, oral sensory processing, and feeding issues associated with prematurity and other various diagnoses in the early intervention population. The presentation will use case studies to discuss and review assessment and treatment on the most common types of feeding difficulties. We will also review using the coaching model to engage parents/caregivers to use and carryover these strategies. By the end of the presentation, participants will have a greater understanding and comfort with assessing and treating feeding difficulties in the early intervention population.
    •    Presentation will include video case studies of three different clients with feeding difficulties commonly seen in the early intervention population. Presentation will include additional case studies if time allots.

Speaker Biography:
Breanna Adkins is an early intervention occupational therapist who specializes in using the coaching model to engage families in their child's plan of care. Ms. Adkins graduated from West Virginia University in 2014 with her Masters of Occupational Therapy and has since begun pursuing her Doctor of Education degree from A.T. Still University. Ms. Adkins has been an adjunct faculty member at West Virginia University for the last year, assisting the occupational therapy program with their pediatric and development courses. Ms. Adkins has also completed numerous hours of continuing education in the areas of early intervention, feeding, eating, and swallowing, and sensory integration techniques.

Learning Objectives:
    1.    Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to identify the presence of feeding difficulties in their early intervention clients using assessment techniques learned in the presentation.
    2.    Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to describe at least five intervention strategies they can utilize for pediatric clients with feeding difficulties.
    3.    Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to compare and contrast the coaching model and the standard therapy delivery model for use with early intervention clients.
    4.    Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to discuss the benefits of using the coaching model for feeding difficulties with early intervention clients.
