Evidence Based Practice: Applying Choosing Wisely Campaign Initiatives Across Practice

Part 1 (60 minutes)
    •    Introduction to AOTA Choosing Wisely & Case Scenarios 

    •    Campaign #2: Don’t provide sensory-based interventions to individual children or youth within documented assessment results of difficulties processing or integrating sensory information. 

    •    Campaign #4: Don’t use reflex integration programs for individuals with delayed primary motor reflexes without clear links to occupational outcomes.
    •    Campaign #5: Don’t provide cognitive-based interventions (i.e. paper and pencil tasks, table-top tasks, cognitive training software) without direct application to occupational performance. 

Part 2: (60 minutes)
    •    Introduction to AOTA Choosing Wisely & Case Scenarios
    •    Campaign #1:  Don’t provide intervention activities that are non-purposeful (i.e. cones, pegs, shoulder arc, arm bike).
    •    Campaign #3: Don’t use physical agent modalities (PAMS) without providing purposeful and occupation-based intervention activities.
    •     Campaign #10: Don’t provide ambulation or gait training interventions that do not directly link to functional mobility.

Event Description
The Choosing Wisely campaign is an initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine with the purpose of promoting conversations between practitioners and clients to ensure assessments and interventions provided are evidence based, free from harm, and necessary (AOTA, 2021). In July 2021, AOTA published their updated items surrounding the Choosing Wisely Campaign “Ten Things Patients and Providers Should Question” (Choosing Wisely, 2021). This two-part asynchronous presentation series provides the current evidence with practice-focused case scenarios to support AOTA’s initiatives regarding “Ten Things Patients and Providers Should Question”. Entry-level occupational therapy students will provide knowledge from their evidence-based project completed in their didactic coursework. Presenters will share the current literature obtained from an evidence-based search outcome surrounding case scenarios rooted in items within the AOTA Involvement in Choosing Wisely campaign. The case scenarios are for practitioners providing occupational therapy services across a variety of clientele and practice settings.

Speaker Biographies
Graduate First Year MAOT and OTD Students 
(Fall 2021: OCTH 7310 Evidence-Based Practice Course)

Hannah Y. Oldenburg, EdD, OTR/L, BCPR is an Assistant Professor at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota teaching courses specific to evidence-based practice, capstone preparation and advisement, and adult rehabilitation. Hannah was a clinical education coordinator for five years, mentoring over 60 Level II fieldwork students in a collaborative 3:1 model in acute care at Mayo Clinic.  In 2012, she graduated with her Masters of Arts in Occupational Therapy from St. Catherine University. She completed her Doctorate in Education at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 2018 with a theoretical dissertation focus on professional reasoning development of occupational and physical therapy students completing a terminal fieldwork or clinical experiences in collaborative versus traditional learning models.  She obtained her AOTA Board Certification in Physical Rehabilitation in Fall of 2019.

Kimberley Persons, DHS, OTR/L, CLA is an assistant professor at St. Catherine University's Occupational Therapy Department. She teaches in the both the master's and doctoral program and mentors master's projects. Kimberley's current research is exploring intradisciplinary education and the role of the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator in occupational therapy education. In 2018, she became a Certified Leader in Academia. She has been an occupational therapy educator for more than 10 years including 6 years as an AFWC. Her clinical background is working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in home and community-based setting. She is an active member of many professional associations and serves on committees for the American Occupational Therapy Association.

    2.    Recall purpose for using evidence to support occupational therapy role and AOTA Choosing Wisely Campaign ® item(s)
    3.    Articulate at least one evidence resource to support client evaluative and intervention approach across practice settings

Presentation represents all practice areas. There will be 6 Case Scenarios that represent all six practice areas with application of current AOTA Choosing Wisely Campaign numbers.
