Event Description

  • This one-hour continuing education presentation will provide an overview of the results from a national study on occupational therapy practitioner perspectives on addressing cognition in acute care. The presenters will share trends regarding the types of standardized and functional performance-based cognitive tools being used among acute care occupational therapy practitioners working in level 1 trauma centers in the United States. Furthermore, results regarding occupational therapy practitioners' report of factors that influenced their use of standardized and performance-based cognitive tools with a variety of hospitalized populations will be shared. A tiered approach to cognition will be shared with considerations for hospitals developing a system to support standardized cognitive tool use to aid the discharge planning process for a variety of populations served in acute care.


Speaker Credentials and Biographies: 


Payton Friend, OTS

Payton Friend is a current entry-level doctorate of occupational therapy student at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN. Her level 2 fieldwork experiences have taken place in a skilled nursing facility and acute care setting at  Mayo Clinic's Charter House and Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN, as well as in acute care at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. Her doctoral capstone project focus involved research on occupational therapy practitioners' perspectives on standardized cognitive screens and standardized cognitive functional performance assessments in acute care settings. She is passionate about functional cognition and plans to pursue a career in acute care following graduation in August 20


Hannah Oldenburg, EdD, OTR/L, BCPR

Hannah Oldenburg, EdD, OTR/L, BCPR is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota. She has experience as an academic fieldwork coordinator and as well as fieldwork educator for Level II experiences in acute care. She has published and presented at state and national conferences on clinical education as well as acute care practice topics. She is also the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Acute Care for Occupational Therapy (JACOT). Hannah was part of a practice group that developed a tiered guide for selection of cognitive screening and assessment tools for evaluation across various populations served in acute care.


Tamra Trenary, OTD, OTR/L

Tamra Trenary, OTD, OTR/L joined Mayo Clinic in 1998. In 2007, she became the Clinical Education Coordinator for Level II fieldwork occupational therapy students in acute care at Mayo Clinic Hospital — Rochester, Saint Marys Campus. Tamra is an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. She has published and presented at state and national conferences on clinical education and acute care practices area. Tamra was part of a practice group that developed a tiered guide for selection of cognitive screening and assessment tools for evaluation across various populations served in acute care.
